Delighted to have presented some work in progress research at The Common City Conference 2026, hosted by Uppsala University’s Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF).
I participated in the session “P13: Contested legacies: Linking struggles against overtourism and mega-events,” where I presented a paper examining the discursive formation and limits of the phrase “overtourism.”

While “overtourism” has become the dominant buzzword in academic and policy debates, our paper interrogates:
🔹 How the discourse was constructed and popularized
🔹 What systemic urban conflicts and power dynamics the term obscures
🔹 The analytical and political limits of framing urban resistance solely around “too many visitors” rather than structural housing, labor, and right-to-the-city struggles
